But I did study geology at bit at the University of Michigan.
And it does seem to me that we have yet to fully appreciate the amount of space debris that has rained down on this planet.
So I just want to postulate this hunch (I don't dare call it a theory).
First of all, the "hotspot" credited with formation of the Hawaiian Islands. This apparently first made an impression at the Mejii Seamount, near the Aleutian Islands, some 80 million years ago.
It seems quite possible to me that this hotspot could be the remnant of a MASSIVE impact of some sort.
I would also suggest that the vulcanism that began 40 million years ago in the San Juan Mountains, where I live in Colorado, could also have been triggered by a massive impact.
Again, just a hunch. I certainly have no actual evidence.
But again I suspect Earth's current surface conditions have been influenced by impacts a lot more than we yet realize.
