[californiadisasters] ADMIN READ: The spam problem

An attempt this morning to get spam into CD prompts me to mention a couple
of things just as reminders. While we have CD set up to keep spam out of the
group, the moderators see the incoming attempts, and there are more and more
of them. (Hard to believe, but some YGs have open membership and everyone
who joins is unmoderated. Boy, do those groups get hit!)

Even though you will seldom (or, we hope, never) get spam in CD or
CD-Discussion, the following reminder will save your bacon in email
elsewhere:

NEVER open a link or attachment in a message from someone you don't know.
For that matter, never open a link or attachment in a message from someone
you do know unless you're expecting it or the message body says, "here's a
link or attachment". Also, make sure it's actually from the person it seems
to be from (you might be amazed how many messages I send myself, with all
kinds of "interesting" offers--I had to block mail from me!).

It's bad enough when these messages contain highly objectionable ads, but
they can also contain malware, which can do any of the following:
Collect all your edresses and spam them.
Log your keystrokes and learn all your passwords,
and then clean out your bank account, take over your credit card, and/or
take over and shut down your Yahoo! Group (as recently happened with a
[suddenly former] owner of several YGs).
Use your computer to send out spam, or worse.

As the sergeant on "Hill Street Blues" always said, "Be careful out there."
