Firefighter Hurt in Angeles National Forest Fire
Updated 7:00 PM PDT, Fri, Aug 20, 2010
A fire burned through more than 100 acres of brush on the Angeles National Forest's northern edge Friday, threatening some structures and prompting evacuations in the sparsely populated area.
The fire was reported at 2:57 p.m. near Big Pines Highway and Largo Vista Road, said Inspector Frederic Stowers of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
As of 5:30 p.m., the fire had burned more than 100 acres. Although crews on the scene initially reported the blaze had been about 40 percent contained, a spokesman for the Angeles National Forest said the blaze was continuing to grow.
``We don't really have containment,'' John D. Wagner said. ``Frankly, it's growing.''
Wagner said evacuations had been ordered in the area, but it was unknown how many people had to leave their homes. An unknown number of structures remained threatened.
An Angeles National Forest firefighter was injured while battling the blaze, Wagner said. The firefighter apparently fell about 50 feet, but the extent of the injuries was not immediately known. The firefighter was flown to Antelope Valley Hospital.
The remote area of the fire is southeast of Valyermo and northwest of Big Pines.
