Start Your Carts This Weekend To Avoid Taxes
Journal Staff Report
For shoppers headed to the mall this weekend, there's good news and bad news.
The good news: They won't have to pay sales tax on many purchases. The bad news: Stores will be crowded as New Mexicans take advantage of the state's annual tax-free holiday.
The tax-free holiday, when the state won't collect gross receipt taxes on certain items purchased, begins Friday at 12:01 a.m. and continues until Sunday at midnight.
Items not being taxed include clothing or shoes costing less than $100, computers sold for less than $1,000 and computer accessories less than $500.
School supplies, such as rulers, paper, pens and pencils, are also included in the tax-free weekend.
For a full list of items that are and aren't covered by the tax-free holiday, visit the state Department of Taxation and Revenue's website at www.tax.state.nm.us .
