A "Green Flag Alert" has been issued by Sierra Madre city officials warning residents to be ready for evacuation in the event of mudslides from heavy rains, it was reported.

A Green Flag Alert is issued when there is an 80% chance or more of precipitation. Forecasters expect rain to continue through the evening, and rainfall totals could be up to 2 inches in some spots.

Residents of the Upper and Lower Canyon areas of the San Gabriel Mountains and those with property near the hillsides are effected, according to city officials cited in the LA Times.

The flag alert system was created following the April 2007 Santa Anita fires stripped the area of vegetation and left communities vulnerable to mud and debris flows.
