A high-pressure system is expected to push the heat into the mid-80s in many spots in Los Angeles County.

Residents of Los Angeles and surrounding areas could experience record-setting high temperatures Sunday as the result of a high-pressure system that stoked Santa Ana wind gusts on Saturday.

"For the Valley, records are lower 80s and we're forecasting the mid-80s … so I could see breaking records," said Bonnie Bartling, weather specialist with the National Weather Service. "We're under a high-pressure system and we have offshore Santa Ana-type conditions, so it's bringing in a lot of drier, warmer air."

The weather service is forecasting highs of 85 in Pasadena and 84 in Burbank. Temperatures are expected to reach 82 in downtown Los Angeles, 79 at LAX and 80 in Long Beach.

The warm weather is expected to carry over into Monday, but the region will see dramatic cooling starting Tuesday and continuing throughout the week.

"We're having above-normal ... temperatures," Bartling said. "But you know we have Santa Anas in December, so it's not unusual."

On Saturday, mountain areas in Los Angeles and Ventura counties experienced heavy winds; advisories for winds up to 40 mph remained in effect for much of the day.
