On This Date In California Weather History....

2009: A cold, unstable air mass in the wake a frontal boundary produced snow on the western floor of the San Joaquin Valley in Buttonwillow and Taft in the late morning.
In Taft, one inch of snow was measured and accumulating snow was also reported in the nearby Temblor Range.
A light accumulation of snow also fell in the Kern County desert near Rosamond.
In addition, thunderstorms also developed in the late morning, with one spawning an EF-0 tornado 10 miles south of Castle Airport in Atwater.

2002: Santa Ana winds started on 2.8 and ended on 2.10.
A gust of 80 mph was measured at Descanso, 78 mph at Fremont Canyon and 76 mph in San Bernardino.
A fire developed in the Fallbrook area.

2001: Over a week of heavy snow that started on 2.6 and ended on 2.14 continued on this day.
The snowfall was called "most in a decade."
Five feet fell at Blue Jay and Mountain High, two feet at Snow Summit, and five to 12 inches at Apple Valley.
The roof of an ice rink caves in at Blue Jay.

1998: El Niño kicked into gear.
Heavy rain that started on 2.6 and ended on this day brought up to three inches of rainfall to Southern California.
Catastrophic and widespread flooding resulted, especially in Newport Beach and Irvine.
Lots of property damage occurred in southern Orange County.
Evacuations and swift water rescues were needed.
Landslides, mud slides, and sink holes occurred.
Roads, bridges, and railroads were damaged.
On this day a tornado hit Cardiff Beach in Encinitas and moved into Rancho Santa Fe causing minor damage.

1993: Heavy rain that started on 2.7 and ended on 2.10 brought one to five inches of rainfall near the coast, up to ten inches of precipitation to the mountains and 0.5 to 1.5 inches in the deserts.
Eight to 18 inches of snow fell in the mountains.
Widespread flooding occurred.

1992: A series of many intense storms started on 2.5 and ended on 2.16.
The storms brought a total of 20+ inches of precipitation to the mountains and eight to16+ inches to lower elevations.
Two were killed in an avalanche at Mt. Baldy.
Flash flooding, mud slides, and road closures also occurred.

1989: Snow fell across the region from the beaches in LA to the desert in Palm Springs.
It started on 2.7 and ended on this day.
15 inches fell in the mountains and three inches fell at Palmdale.
Major road closures and numerous traffic accidents resulted.

1986: A snowstorm on 2.8 and on this day brought eight inches to Cuyamaca, seven inches at Mt. Laguna and four inches at Julian.

1978: Second wettest calendar day ever in Bakersfield for any month of the year, 2.29 inches of rain fell.

1978: A tornado hit Irvine.
Heavy rain that began on 2.8 ended on 2.10. 16.4 inches fell at Lytle Creek, 13.64 inches at Lake Arrowhead, 11.97 inches in Wrightwood, 11.15 inches in Devore, 10.4 inches at Santiago Peak, 8.5 inches in Crestline, 5 inches in Ontario, 4.79 inches in Big Bear Lake, and 3.83 inches in Santa Ana.
20 were killed all over Southern California.
Widespread flooding, flash flooding, and mud slides resulted, and numerous homes washed away.

1976: Strong storm winds hit 64 mph at Palmdale.

1963: Heavy rain that began on this day ended on 2.11.
Highways and homes were flooded. High surf caused damage to coastal homes and structures.

1938: Fresno recorded sustained winds of 43 mph from the southeast, a record for the month of February.

1932: A heavy rainstorm hit San Diego's north county and the Inland Empire. One woman drowned in Loma Linda when her bus was caught in floodwaters. Some highways and bridges were closed. The Santa Ana River ran 500 feet wide at Riverside.

1917: Victorville had a long thermometer; remarkably, both the record high temperature of 70° and the record low temperature of 18° were set on this day.

1906: The wettest day on record for Bakersfield for February and any month of the year with a whopping 4.10" of rain recorded.
