PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Turbulent motion in the geophysical environment is important for transport and mixing processes of natural and anthropogenic quantities, including momentum, heat, nutrients, or pollutants. In turn, velocity shear, density stratification, and system rotation present in the geophysical system affect properties of the turbulent motion. This symposium invites participants from a variety of backgrounds and employing various techniques to share their insights into the dynamics of turbulence.

Dr. Harindra Joseph Fernando (Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences, and Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN), Journeying Through Stressed Urban Systems.

The Pacific Division annual meeting will feature a lecture by Professor Harindra Joseph Fernando, an expert in fluid dynamics at the University of Notre Dame, on tsunamis and storm surges, with insights gained from the Indian Ocean tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.

TSUNAMIS AND STORM SURGES

Harindra J. Fernando, an ocean and atmospheric researcher at the University of Notre Dame, will give a lecture that provides fresh insights about why Sri Lanka suffered so much death and destruction after a 9.1 earthquake erupted in the Indian Ocean in December 2004 and produced a major tsunami. "The tsunami came from the east coast side of the island, but it wrapped around Sri Lanka and had a big impact on the west coast," Fernando says. "The damage was exacerbated by human activities. There is a lot of 'coral poaching' (the removal of coral during blast fishing) in Sri Lanka. And some sand dunes had been removed to improve the views from hotels. The impact on Sri Lanka would not have been as bad if these human activities had not occurred." Fernando's research is meant to help shape safety laws in regions susceptible to being hit by tsunamis.
