On Camp Pendleton, it's "live fire" school
ByJune 9th, 2011, 5:02 pm · posted by Pat Brennan, O.C. science, environment editorThe Camp Pendleton Marine base is holding "live fire" exercises through Friday to help train firefighters using real flames.
About 50 federal, state and local agencies are taking part in the training, including the Orange County Fire Authority.
The exercise is being hosted by the Camp Pendleton Fire Department, although the instructors come from the Angeles, Cleveland and San Bernardino national forests.
"We're trying to get the new ones, who haven't seen too much fire," said U.S. Forest Service fire information officer Nathan Judy. "They can initially attack this fire when they come on the scene, and see what to do to put those fires out."
And there's an added bonus, Judy said: The exercises will reduce the fuel load on the base, perhaps reducing the risk of a real wildfire.
Three different sites are being set afire during the week-long exercise, likely totaling about 50 to 100 acres by the time it's finished, he said.
Neither flames nor smoke are likely to be visible from Orange County, although drivers passing by on Interstate 5 might see it.
The exercises have been conducted on the base for the past 30 years, Judy said, but none of the fires has gotten out of control.
