A magnitude 6.5 earthquake occurred off the eastern coast of Japan at 9:43 PDT on Saturday, close to the area that produced a catastrophic 9.0 quake in March, says the US Geological Survey. But the event will not send a tsunami across the Pacific basin to Southern California. The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement Friday night saying, "A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas."

Friday's temblor, says the Associated Press, "was centered 25 miles (40 kilometers) below the sea bed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Miyagi prefecture – in the same area where more than 22,000 people were killed or went missing after the March 11 quake and tsunami."
