Japan has again been hit by a large earthquake.A magnitude 7.0 earthquake erupted 20 miles beneath the sea floor, 130 miles east of Sendai, at 10:57 p.m. local time (5:57 p.m. in California.) The quake was originally listed at 7.1 and led to a tsunami watch for Japan that was later canceled.
The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Center issued an advisory that says: "Based on the earthquake magnitude, location and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides.
"At 5:57 PM Pacific Daylight Time on July 9, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.1 occurred off the east coast of Honshu, Japan . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.) "
The catastrophic 9.0 quake that hit Japan in March produced a tsunami that caused damage in Hawaii and in Northern California. The quake had a minor impact of wave heights in Southern California.
