| 12/07 | 0900 | The nation will pause for a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time -- or 9:55 a.m. in Los Angeles and 12:55 p.m. in New York -- to mark the exact moment that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor without warning 70 years ago as today is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, which is annually on December 7, commemorates the attack on Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii, during World War II. Many American service men and women lost their lives or were injured on December 7, 1941. Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is not a federal holiday. Government offices, schools, businesses and other organizations do not close. Public transit systems run on their regular schedules.
President Obama stated "Seventy years ago today, a bright Sunday morning was darkened by the unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbor". "Today, we join all Americans in honoring the memory of the more than 2,400 American patriots - military and civilian, men, women and children - who gave their lives in our first battle of the Second World War". Our thoughts and prayers are with the families for whom this day is deeply personal - the spouses, brothers and sisters, and sons and daughters who have known seven decades without a loved one but who have kept their legacy alive for future generations. |
