[californiadisasters] Sacto Area Grass Fire Ignites Barn & Vehicles

Grass fire ignites barn, vehicles in rural area

Published: Thursday, Jun. 16, 2011 - 10:16 am | Page 2B

A fire involving a barn and several vehicles on a rural Elk Grove property was contained by fire crews Wednesday afternoon, a Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department spokeswoman said.

The blaze was originally reported as a grass fire at about 3:45 p.m., in the 10600 block of Rau Road, said department Fire Chief Tracey Hansen. The first units to arrive also found a barn and nearby vehicles fully involved, and the primary residence on the property threatened, Hansen said.

Two people on the scene required medical treatment, said department Battalion Chief Greg Langer. One man sustained burn injuries to his hands and was transported to the hospital. A second man was treated for heatstroke at the scene.

[californiadisasters] Officials Worry About Flooding On Mok River

Officials worry about flooding on the Mokelumne River

Published: Thursday, Jun. 30, 2011 - 11:50 am
Last Modified: Thursday, Jun. 30, 2011 - 12:23 pm

Officials are growing concerned about a risk of flooding on the Mokelumne River today as Camanche Dam is forced to throw open its floodgates to handle massive snowmelt runoff.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District, which owns the dam, plans to increase releases to 5,000 cubic feet per second by noon. That is the maximum controlled release volume the dam is capable of, and matches the channel capacity downstream.

District spokesman Charles Hardy said there is a risk of additional uncontrolled releases from the dam's spillway after that, because the reservoir is 97 percent full and inflow from upstream already exceeds 5,000 cfs. The watershed received 1.6 inches of rain in Tuesday's unusual storm, he said, which is still making its way downstream.

"It's just more water coming in than we can handle," Hardy said.

The district has closed a public day-use area below the dam. Further downstream, the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office has closed Stillman Magee Park, a popular access point for boaters, anglers and others.

"Deputies will be stationed there to turn people away," said Det. Dave Konecny. "It's very unsafe, obviously, from how cold the water is and the heavy releases."

The county's emergency services director, Ron Baldwin, said there is a risk of levee breaks and flooding downstream in Lodi and Thornton if flows exceed 5,000 cfs.

"That would cause some problems," Baldwin said.

[californiadisasters] 2 Hikers Swept Away From Bridge in Yosemite

Yosemite: Hiker dead, another missing in runoff

One hiker died and a second is missing after being swept away by unusually high late-season runoff as they tried to cross a bridge spanning a waterfall near Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park, authorities said Thursday.

The two men were swept into Falls Creek as they were returning from a four-day backpacking trip with three companions Wednesday, park spokeswoman Kari Cobb said.

Cobb said the hikers had no trouble crossing the Wapama Falls bridge when they set out on their trip Sunday.

By the time they returned, however, the waterfall was swollen by snowmelt and runoff from a storm that hit the mountains Tuesday, Cobb said.

The men who were swept away were at the head of the group and tried to cross the span even though water was washing over part of it, Cobb said.

"The bridge had a lot of water on it," Cobb said. "Here at the park, the way it works, you are responsible for taking your own risk and making your own decisions on safety."

The backpackers were about 5 miles from the trailhead. Cobb said they could have gotten back by taking an alternate route that would have added several miles to their trip.

One of the men's bodies was found in the reservoir. The second is still missing. Their names have not been released.

The tragedy highlights the dangers in the Sierra backcountry in a year with an unusual amount of late-season snow. Cobb noted that the snowpack is 200 percent of average, and rivers and creeks in the park are expected to remain high for several more days.

The Wapama Falls bridge was open before Wednesday's incident because "we don't typically close trails unless there has been an active hazard, like rocks," Cobb said. Rangers closed the span after the men were swept away.

Lassen is a fantastic place to visit.  It is the only place on earth where you can see all four types of volcanoes: shield, plug, cinder cone and composite.  You can hike to the top of Mt Lassen peak (10,457 ft), where there is snow year round.  Lake Helen is a spectacular glacial blue, and my favorite hike is following the meandering King's Creek to the steps next to the falls.  Just outside the National Park are McArthur-Burney Falls and Subway Cave Lava Tube.

Lassen Volcanic National Park
California

Recent natural events remind us that the earth is anything but static. Forces of nature both fascinate and frighten us, leaving us with a desire to understand our part in earth's cycle of creation and destruction. Lassen Volcanic National Park tells a story of an eruptive past and offers an opportunity to witness first-hand the ancient battle of earth-shaping forces.

Home to more than 30 volcanic domes, Lassen Volcanic gets its name from one of the largest plug dome volcanoes in the world. Photos of the dramatic eruption of Lassen Peak in 1915 brought unanticipated attention to the little-known area in northeastern California. Soon after the eruption, the park was established and the main road built to allow visitors to explore the volcanic features.

Today, this same road allows visitors to follow in the wake of countless travelers who have discovered the wonders that wait around each bend. See glistening steam plumes rising from a roadside fumarole (steam vent), or surround yourself with the gurgling symphony of boiling mudpots at Sulphur Works. At Devastated Area, take a moment to imagine the massive mudflow that raced down Lassen Peak, uprooting 100-foot-tall trees, or the explosion that hurled huge boulders from the peak's summit to where you now stand.

While volcanic forces bring about dramatic creation and destruction at Lassen, another, unsuspected force quietly continues to mold the land. Just below the ground, hot rocks cause water to boil and escape aboveground as steam. These hydrothermal, or hot water, features tear apart rock and transform valleys into colorful, bubbling wonderlands. Boardwalks and guardrails allow visitors to wander safely amid crack ed yellow and red mounds of dissolved rock at Devils Kitchen, hover over the whirling steam and fiery cracks of Bumpass Hell, and listen to the sounds of plopping, hissing, and belching at Sulphur Works.

Between Lassen's jagged volcanic peaks and otherworldly hydrothermal areas, one can also find the tranquility and majesty of wildflower-filled meadows and clear mountain lakes. Enjoy a day hike to the rumbling rapids of Kings Creek Falls, cast a line as you float across Manzanita Lake, or wander through the woods in the company of chattering chipmunks at Summit Lake. Keep in mind as you enjoy these spectacular landscapes that natural forces are at work here too. Try to see the deepening of Butte Creek as water carves its way to Butte Lake, or witness Diamond Peak shrinking as melting snow moves the rock formation downhill piece by piece.

An excursion into Lassen Volcanic National Park provides an opportunity to experience a changing landscape in its dramatic an d gradual forms. As we continue to protect and preserve this area as a national park, it will undoubtedly transform and redefine itself. You are invited to witness this remarkable process for a day, a week, or more in the dynamic and breathtaking setting of Lassen Volcanic National Park.

A New National Park Getaway Every Wednesday
