[californiadisasters] Fwd:This September: A Time to Remember. A Time to Prepare.

Dear friend of the LAFD,

As you know, this September will mark the ten year anniversary of 9/11 and the Los Angeles Fire Department asks you to take time to remember those lost as well as time to make sure you are prepared for future emergencies. September is National Preparedness Month (NPM), which was founded after 9/11 to increase preparedness in the U.S. It is a time to prepare yourself and those in your care for an unexpected emergency.

Please plan in the event you must go for three days without electricity, water service, access to a supermarket, or local services for several days. The Los Angeles Fire Department along with our friends at FEMA and Ready.gov suggest you follow these three simple steps:

1. Get a Kit: Keep enough emergency supplies on hand for you and those in your care – water, non-perishable food, first aid, prescriptions, flashlight, battery-powered radio.

2. Make a Plan: Discuss, agree on, and document an emergency plan with those in your care. Work together with neighbors, colleagues and others to build community resilience.

3. Be Informed: Free information is available to assist you from federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial resources. You can find preparedness information by:

  • Accessing Ready.gov to learn what to do before, during, and after an emergency.
  • Contacting your local emergency management agency to get essential information on specific hazards to your area, local plans for shelter and evacuation, ways to get information before and during an emergency, and sign up for emergency alerts.
  • Contacting your neighborhood Fire Station and asking for a tour and information about preparedness.

Some have asked, "Why do I need to prepare?".

Fire, police, and rescue personnel may not always be able to reach you quickly. They may become overwhelmed by demand from multiple emergencies, or trees and power lines are down blocking access. The most important step you can take in helping us, is being able to take care of yourself and those in your care; the more people who are prepared, the quicker the community will recover.

*Firefighters don't forget to plan ahead for YOUR loved ones as Ready Responders*

Other thunderstorms dropped a blanket of hail over vast areas between Big Bear Lake and the San Gorgonio Wilderness.
A significant accumulation of small hail was seen for many days at the top of Mt. San Gorgonio.

This tropical cyclone holds the distinction of traveling the farthest west before recurving and making landfall in Southern California.
This occurred during the El NiƱo of 1972-73.
Only 0.44 inch was measured in San Diego.

1967: Hurricane Katrina crossed the southern tip of Baja California, then traversed almost the entire length of the Gulf of California before making landfall again and rapidly weakening.

[californiadisasters] Big Waves Flood Streets in Newport Beach

Many residents found themselves knee deep in water.

By Ted Chen, Kevin Dahlgren and Neil Costes | KNBC-TV Los Angeles
|  Wednesday, Aug 31, 2011  |  Updated 7:43 PM PDT
A big wet surprise greeted people living near the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach Wednesday morning.

At high tide around 11:00 a.m., an ocean surge flooded the park and surrounding streets, suddenly placing some residents knee deep in water.

"It was insane and it just kept coming and coming, and it just started flooding everything," Newport Beach resident Bridge Ross said.

Crews quickly went to work pumping out water and building a sand berm to prevent a repeat during the next high tide.

The swells began building all day at the popular surfing spot known as "The Wedge."  Lifeguards put up tape to warn of the danger in the water and made sure they knew the skill level of anyone going in.

"If people aren't ready to be out there and commit to how large the swells are, how dangerous the currents are, we don't want them out there," lifeguard Arnie Van Dyke said.

Most people were content to stay on the sand and watch the waves from the beach.

"They're fantastic," said Carmen Swiggert, who was visiting from Pittsburgh.  "I've never seen waves that big."

[californiadisasters] Family and Friends Remember Victims of Cerritos Plane Crash

25th Anniversary of Cerritos Plane Crash

By Olga Spilewsky and Patrick Healy | KNBC-TV Los Angeles
|  Wednesday, Aug 31, 2011  |  Updated 7:33 PM PDT
On this day 25 years ago, an Aeromexico jet collided with a small single-engine plane over Cerritos, killing 82 people.

On Wednesday, family and friends gathered at a memorial ceremony to remember their loved ones. City officials read the names of the victims and laid a wreath, marking the 25th anniversary of the air disaster.

Some residents remember that day like it was yesterday.

"I just heard a loud noise and I thought it was a car crash out on Artesia Blvd., " said Randy Economy. "And, I went out to the backyard and I looked out back, and I literally saw the jet come right at me."

The jet plummeted into Randy's residential neighborhood alongside Carmenita Avenue, moments after the jet was clipped by a small plane. All 67 aboard the aircraft died, along with 15 more on the ground.

"You were either dead or you didn't have a scratch on you," said Economy.

Then-L.A. Deputy Sheriff Tom Laing helped set up the perimeter of the crash on the ground.

"People would reach out to me and say I found a part of a plane in my backyard or say, I found a young person's body part in my garage," said Laing.

Reverend Don Koepke ministered to a wife and mother who was returning from the store when the jetliner smashed into her house, claiming 3 members of her family.

"She let out a moan like I've never heard and never will hear again," he said.

There were also many people waiting for loved ones to return home.

"I had just gotten out of the shower. I was dressed and the phone rang. And, it was my cousin's wife on the phone," said a tearful Lorraine Ayala.

"You know, 25 years is a long time to heal and you go through the healing process, but it's never the same," said Veronica Gutierrez, who lost her mother and brother in the crash.

The air disaster led to improvements in aviation safety, including adding new electronics to prevent mid-air collisions.

[Geology2] Prehistoric bird found in fossil treasure io Western Australia

I love when that happens . . .

Prehistoric bird found in fossil treasure PhysOrg.com [USA], August 15,
2011

A Flinders University-led expedition involving the WA Museum has found
the fossilised remains of a prehistoric bird, possibly a wedge-tailed
eagle, in a cave on the Nullarbor Plain. The bird is more than 780,000
years old. Flinders' palaeontologist, Dr. Gavin Prideaux (pictured),
said the almost complete skeleton was unearthed amidst dozens of bird
bones in a cave known as Leaena's Breath Cave – about 70 kilometers on

the WA side of the border with South Australia. "We've only ever found
one partial eagle fossil before so, given how complete this specimen is,

it would be an exciting discovery," Dr. Prideaux said.
