Ahh thank you. I knew Pliny had something to do with it. Allison

Hi Allison,
A Plinian eruption means that a large amount of ash and gas is ejected into the sky as a column, even as far as the Stratosphere. As you might guess, a Plinian eruption is always associated with a violent eruption, and sometimes includes pyroclastic flows. The lava is rhyolitic with a high amount of silicates, and pumice is often ejected.
A Plinian eruption gets its name from Pliny the Elder, who, attempted to save people from an erupting Vesuvius. There is a popular myth circulated in that he flung himself into the volcano in order to experience an eruption (curiosity to the nth power), but he was overcome by gases and died on the side of the volcano. The event was reported by his son, Pliny the Younger.
Back to how the term, Plinian, became associated with a type of eruption, take all the above, and add it to the Vesuvius eruption in 79AD that was of a particular shape and force.
And there you have it. :-)

Well wow. Now I have heard that the Yellowstone area was a Plinian eruption. And this is a Plinian eruption too? Plinian as in the Roman Pliny? Maybe the one who died on the beach at Pompeii? I don't understand the full meaning of the phrase though. AllisonFrom: Lin Kerns <linkerns@gmail.com>

When it's blue, it's not only hot--it's hawt. Seriously, this is the first time I've managed to catch Etna with so many cams and yes, I'm recording pictures on 8 of them. lol I'm going to have a mess to clean up when it's over, but for now, I'm on Cloud 9. At one point, Etna went into a Plinian eruption. Now that was way cool, too.
This all began last night and I left the computer up and running taking snaps all night. What's so very cool about it is that it began small and within 24 hours went large. Gads, how I wish I could be there. Man.

Etna is on a rampage tonight. A Full Blown Eruption on about 8 cams at one time.
