RE: [Geology2] Video of The Day: Yosemite HD Time Lapse

Hi Allison,

Yah, it’s a day trip, about 2:45 to drive there (through the “Gold Country”.  Tahoe is the backyard (about 90 minutes); Sacramento is the front porch (30 min) and the Pacific Ocean is the front yard (about 2.5 hours).  Except for the crowds, it’s a nice place to live.

I have a few Yosemite pix on FB from Father’s Day last year (my last time there).  That trip is the reason my youngest now FULLY understands Dad’s rules for Nat’l parks...

Never go to a National Park:

on weekends;

When school is out;

On holidays.

And NEVER any combo of the above at the same time (yup, it was awful crowded).

Taking 90 minutes to go 1.5 miles to get through the gate was an omen.  When he heard me start cussing folks out in Russian (LOUDLY out the window), he knew that day trip was about over (Spanish is bad, Russian means HIDE).  We spent the weekend there (stayed outside the park) and Sunday afternoon was tolerable (after everyone else left).  1.5 miles of walking (each way) for lunch (For a stale $10 sandwich?  No, eat the truck snacks.); folks parking IN the traffic lane on narrow blind turns (where my pick up barely fits in the lane?  Really?) and no parking for two miles from Glacier Point (which is where I started discussing their heritage in Russian).

On the plus side, I had never seen so much water there (waterfalls EVERYwhere).  I also freaked out the group we were caravanning (I lead) with when I suddenly dove to the side of the road and jumped out of the truck (twice in fact).  I had spotted bears, duh.  No one else saw them (3 other cars) and they were only 15 feet off the road.  When a ranger barked at me the third time I went after bears, I decided the day was over (I was WELL within legal distance (100 yards) that time too, she was just being bossy/grumpy).  Just as well, the light was failing anyway.

Then there was the trip to Yellowstone where I sat and watch a black bear (beautiful golden blond hair) feeding, about 40 feet away.  That ranger was cool with it, but we were both too close (the bear didn’t care, s/he was HUNGRY and eating grass to clear the gut).  We joked that we didn’t have to be the fastest in the crowd, just faster than most.  The icing on THAT cake was the bull moose 100 yards to the right.

Your side yard, huh. Nice. I have never been to Yosemite but hope to remedy that situation. Allison

Welcome to my side yard, one of the reasons I chose to live here.
