The "Family Links" site is operated by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and is more geared towards international events ocurring outside the US.  Still a great tool to keep in our collective toolboxes though!

Additionally, the American Red Cross utilizes the "Safe and Well" system - allowing people to register themselves, and loved ones to search for them in the database.  Safe and Well may be accessed by computer, smart phone or by calling 1-800-RedCross.  It can even update the persons Facebook and Twitter status to help notify more people of their whereabouts.  www.redcross.org/safeandwell

Great stuff ... Here's a link to an article about this new app -

I subscribe to the U.S. Fire Academy's (Emmitsburg, MD) Learning Resource Center Updates.
You might want to do the same, that is, if you don't do so already <smile>.
Visit: http://www.lrc.fema.gov/

Also, as you probably already know, there are two web sites (I know of) that might be of use to locate family members or loved ones after a natural or man-made disaster -
Red Cross Family Links - http://www.familylinks.icrc.org/
National Next of Kin Registry: http://www.nokr.org/
There are probably more, but these are the ones that fall trippingly off my tongue and keyboard <smile>.
