In Memoriam– On the Battlement Creek fire in Colorado, two separate incidents resulted in four fatalities. On July 16th, 1976, air tanker pilot Don Goodman was killed when his B-26 crashed while dropping retardant. The following day, Morman Lake Hotshots Anthony Czak, Stephen Furey, and Scott Nelson were were killed when they were overrun by fire during a burnout operation. Following this fire, it became standard protocol for firefighters to carry fire shelters. CA-MNF Mill Fire. 29,552 acres, 67% contained. The slow predicted overnight recoveries (after midnight RH 60-80%) may create control problems at the start of the operational shift.
