[californiadisasters] RE: Release of New Federal Employee Preparedness Courses (Corrected Version)

Thanks Vincent for the request for clarification.

FEMA EMI just released two online, Independent Study Courses on Emergency Preparedness:

1.    IS-450 (Target Audience is those folks outside the National Capital Region (outside of Washington D.C. area))- http://training.fema.gov/emiweb/IS/IS450.asp

2.    IS-450.NC (Target Audience is US (you and me) in the NCR) - http://training.fema.gov/emiweb/IS/IS450NC.asp

There are no in-class courses.  My error, in that I didn’t clarify what I meant by two new courses.

Very Respectfully,

FYI:

I am excited to announce the release of two (02) Federal Employee emergency preparedness courses by FEMA. While I have been a part of this project since its inception, the real thanks should go to Steward Beckham, Cheri Roe, and Alex Yesnik of FEMA’s Office of National Capital Region Coordination.  They have been working tirelessly in the past year with Federal, State, and Local governments to increase emergency preparedness and coordinate response policy for the National Capital Region’s 340,000+ Federal Employees.

I hope you will have or make time to at least complete either version of the Federal Employees Preparedness Courses released yesterday (see links below).

Please click on the course links below, and take a look at the Emergency Preparedness Brochure for Federal Employees in the NCR (http://www.fema.gov/library/viewRecord.do?id=6018.

As a former Coast Guardsman (over 30 years), I would be remiss if I didn’t end this announcement with the salutation -

Semper Paratus (Always Prepared)!

Very Respectfully,

Subject: New Independent Study Courses on Emergency Preparedness for Federal Employees

***Sent on behalf of Steward Beckham, Director, FEMA Office of National Capital Region Coordination***

Dear National Capital Region Stakeholders:

The FEMA Office of National Capital Region Coordination (NCRC) is excited to announce the release of two new Independent Study (IS) courses on emergency preparedness for Federal employees:

·         IS-450: Emergency Preparedness for Federal Employees

·         IS-450.NC: Emergency Preparedness for Federal Employees in the National Capital Region

Both courses introduce practical steps Federal employees can take to prepare for emergencies that could threaten their homes, workplaces, or communities.  The NCR version includes information specific to the Washington, D.C. Area, including information on Metro, OPM closure and dismissal procedures, and local alerting systems.  Both courses take approximately one hour to complete.

These courses are designed so any Federal department or agency can choose to adopt them as recommended or mandatory training, depending on agency needs.  Some departments, like DHS, intend to implement these courses as required training for all employees.  Other organizations may choose to recommend these courses to employees with certain emergency duties, like members of an Emergency Relocation Group or Occupant Emergency Team.

These courses can be taken online, for free, at the public Web site for the FEMA Independent Study Program, available at www.training.fema.gov/is/.  Employees who complete training through this Web site will receive a certificate of completion after successfully passing a final exam.  In addition, these courses may be available to load into your agency's own internal learning management system.

Please see the attached document for some additional details about these courses.  If you have any questions, please contact Alexander Yesnik at (202) 212-1383 or alexander.yesnik@dhs.gov.

Thank you to all of the many organizations that contributed to the development of these courses.  We hope you can incorporate these courses into your emergency management programs and consider sharing them with employees as part of any communications you may have planned for National Preparedness Month.

Sincerely,

Steward D. Beckham
