It does make sense. He is definitely more sophisticated than the average L.A. killer and has the means to do some outsmarting. Then of course that means he needed to have a second car already up there, which creates some logistical complications. Or someone else was involved with the ride (on purpose or forced)...

I have been thinking the same thing. Switch vehicles, burn his truck, draw all the searchers to Big Bear and head back to LA to continue his efforts to eliminate anyone from LAPD who ever crossed him. He is not the usual spree killer, he is a man who has declared a one man guerrilla war on LAPD.
