July 4, 2013 - Lightning activity for the past 24 hours resulted in 112 lightning strikes hitting the Tahoe National Forest. Most of the strikes were concentrated on the Sierraville District - 77 downstrikes were part of the lightning event that prompted a severe thunderstorm warning from the National Weather Service. At 6:51 pm, National Weather Service Doppler Radar continued to indicate a severe thunderstorm capable of producing quarter size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. This storm was located over south central Sierra County or 7 miles south of Sierraville. This storm was nearly stationary.

The locations for the 112 strikes within the Tahoe National Forest were recorded as follows: 5 for American River Ranger District, 77 for Sierraville Ranger District, 24 for Truckee Ranger District, and 6 for Yuba River Ranger District.

The TNF reports three fires from lightning yesterday: One, south of Loyalton, was just a spot. It was fully controlled last night. Two more small fires were identified in the Pole Creek and Silver Peak areas south of Truckee, west of Highway 89. Crews will continue to work on them today. Additional thunderstorms and lightning expected today on both the east and west sides of the Sierra crest.

5,213 strikes were recorded throughout the state, concentrated along the higher elevations of the Sierra and the coastal range. The lightning sparked a fire 5 miles northwest of Aiden in Modoc County. The 3-7 fire is currently at 502 acres and 40% contained. Its forward progress has been stopped.

The National Weather Service forecast for today reads as follows:

One last day of very hot temperatures is expected today across northern California, with much of the Valley expected to reach between 105 and 112 degrees. If you're planning on engaging in outdoor activities for this 4th of July, remember your heat safety tips! Cooler weather is expected beginning tomorrow, with much of the Valley expected to drop below triple digits.

Safety Reminders:

Summer in California is officially underway and the warm temperatures bring increased outdoor activities, with the Fourth of July being no exception. Many Californians and tourists will be celebrating our nation's independence with fireworks, and CAL FIRE wants to stress the importance of fireworks safety and the State's zero tolerance against illegal fireworks. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), coordinator of the Alliance to Stop Consumer Fireworks is marking the upcoming Fourth of July holiday by releasing its annual fireworks report, which details fire and injury dangers related to consumer fireworks. An estimated 17,800 reported fires were started by fireworks and 9,600 fireworks-related injuries were treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms in 2011. On a typical Fourth of July, there are more fires than on any other day of the year, with fireworks accounting for two out of five of those fires, more than any other cause of fires. Please remember to be safe this 4th of July!
