A brush fire that began Saturday afternoon at Camp Pendleton has grown to 1,500 acres and forced evacuations of base housing units.

The fire was reported around 12:45 p.m. Saturday near the DeLuz training area and Lake O'Neil.

Cal Fire has dubbed the fire the DeLuz Fire and as of 9 a.m Sunday. it was 15 percent contained.

Base officials said the fire is moving north along the Santa Margarita River.

Smoke from the fire was visible throughout the North County.

Around 218 firefighters from Camp Pendleton and Mutual Aid crews were expected to fight the blaze throughout Saturday evening.

The fire prompted the evacuation of Camp Pendleton's O'Neill Heights housing units to the Paige Fieldhouse Saturday, according to the base Public Affairs Office. Camp Pendleton officials announced Sunday morning that O'Neil residents would be able to return to their homes once fire officials determined it was safe to do so.

The Camp Pendleton Scout Facebook page posted the following Sunday morning, "The 11 families who stayed at the Paige Fieldhouse last night will be given housing at the Marine Manor, at no cost to them, for as long as they aren't able to return to their homes. All other displaced families have also been given billeting in the Mainside area."

In all, 230 residents have been evacuated from base housing, according to officials.

The fire also forced 30 patient evacuations at the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton which was said to be operating normally Sunday. Patients from the Naval hospital were evacuated to Tri-City Hospital and Naval Medical Center San Diego.

Several buildings have sustained minor damage due to the blaze but there have been no reports of any injuries, according to the Camp Pendleton Scout Facebook page.

Those evacuated from Camp Pendleton with pets can drop them off, free of charge, at the Bark Avenue resort and camp at 655 Benet Rd. in Oceanside. Officials there said evacuees should contact the resort at (760) 433-3763 before arriving.
