Re: [californiadisasters] Jurupa Fire in Riverside

Winds are calm now and reporters are saying the whole thing is dying off.   But I agree, if the winds come as predicted, it could be big trouble.   The biggest thing so far has been embers drifting from large trees burning in the riverbed.

The same thing happened to several of her neighbors from what I could

the backs of the houses. If and when the Santa Ana winds kick in, they
will blow the fire right into the houses.

[Geology2] Big Meteorite Discovered in Antarctica

Meteorite hunters at the bottom of the world bagged a rare find this southern summer: a 40-pound (18 kilogram) chunk of extraterrestrial rock.

A team from Belgium and Japan discovered the hefty meteorite as the members drove across the East Antarctic plateau on snowmobiles. Initial tests show it is an ordinary chondrite, the most common type of meteorite found on Earth, Vinciane Debaille, a geologist from Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium, said in a statement.

"This is the biggest meteorite found in East Antarctica for 25 years," Debaille said. "This is something very exceptional. When you find such a meteorite on Earth, it means that when it was in the sky, it was much larger." [Images of the Antarctic meteorite.]

More than 38,000 meteorites have been found in Antarctica, but only 30 bigger than 40 pounds (18 kg). The big meteorite found in Antarctica is an ordinary chondrite.

The Russian meteor that burst into fragments above the Chelyabinsk region on Feb. 15 is also an ordinary chondrite, according to initial tests by Russian scientists.

Every year, scientists travel to Antarctica to search for meteorites. Their charred black crust stands out starkly in the white snow, and the cold, dry climate helps preserve any organic chemicals inside the rocks.

The expedition collected 425 meteorites in 40 days, with a total weight of 165 pounds (75 kg). Debaille said they may have found one Mars meteorite and one piece of the asteroid Vesta among the many discoveries.

The researchers canvassed the Nansen Ice Field, 86 miles (140 kilometers) south out of the International Polar Foundation's Princess Elisabeth station. The United States also sent scientists out on the polar ice to collect meteorites this season, from McMurdo Station on the opposite end of the continent.

[Geology2] Underwater Eruption Shows How Volcanic Islands Grow

Underwater Eruption Shows How Volcanic Islands Grow

Date: 26 February 2013

From strange floating rocks to collapsing cones, an underwater eruption near Spain's Canary Islands last year was a rare chance for scientists to watch how volcanic islands are built.

El Hierro volcano spewed "a modest quantity" of lava into the ocean — only enough to fill 120,000 swimming pools, according to a new report. But monitoring the submarine eruption was crucial, because shallow water volcanism can become explosive and endanger human life, said Miquel Canals Artigas, a geologist at the University of Barcelona in Spain.

Between October 2011 and February 2012, Artigas and his colleagues sailed the turbid, ash-filled waters above the erupting El Hierro volcano, scanning its changing shape with sonar to create high-resolution bathymetric maps. Their findings are detailed in the March 2013 issue of the journal Geology.

Birth of a volcano

El Hierro, the youngest of the Canary Islands, lies 290 miles (460 kilometers) west of the coast of Morocco and the Western Sahara. The new eruption occurred just off the island's coast, near the fishing village of La Restinga. The underwater eruption closed fisheries on the island and forced residents to temporarily evacuate.

The cone-shaped underwater volcano was already more than 490 feet (150 meters) tall and growing ever closer to the ocean surface when the ship arrived two weeks after the eruption began on Oct. 10, 2011.

"It was very exciting to be able to follow how the volcanic cone was growing up, from more than 350 meters [1,150 feet] depth [below the ocean's surface] to barely 90 meters [295 feet]," Artigas told OurAmazingPlanet in an email interview. The survey found more than 200 similar cones on the island's underwater flanks. [50 Amazing Volcano Facts]

The cone deflated or collapsed repeatedly during the ongoing eruption, the researchers found. By Nov. 13, 2011, a second cone-style vent opened, but landslides morphed the cones into a fissure eruption, with at least four vents burbling lava by Feb. 24, 2012.

Lava balloons

Odd-looking floating rocks, which geologists deem "bombs," appeared in the waters above the volcano. The rocks had a white core filled with air bubbles called vesicles and a dark-colored rim of basanite rock, a different rock type than the core. While balloons of floating lava have been found at underwater eruptions before, these "restingolites" are new and scientists are hotly debating how they formed, Hans-Ulrich Schmincke, a geologist at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Germany, wrote in an article accompanying the El Hierro research in the journal Geology.

The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA's Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite acquired this natural-color image of El Hierro and a plume of volcanic material in the surrounding waters on Nov. 2, 2011.

El Hierro's vents released at least 11 billion cubic feet (329 million cubic meters) of lava, not accounting for blobs carried away by currents or trundled into deeper water.

"It is a really modest quantity," said Jesús Rivera, a geologist at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and lead author of the study. "About 9,000 similar eruptions would be necessary to happen at 125 years intervals in order to construct an island [like] El Hierro," Rivera said in a statement.

The eruption was accompanied by more than 12,500 earthquakes, from July 2011 through March 2012. The largest, a magnitude 4.4, struck on Oct. 8, 2011.

The upwelling lava and gas killed off fish and plankton, researchers reported last year. The water heated up by as much as 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18.8 degrees Celsius) and the pH of the water went down by 2.8, meaning it became more acidic.

New eruption possible

Though the volcanic activity was declared over on March 6 by officials, a burst of earthquakes in June and September of 2012 raised fears that the gushing lava might reappear.

Earlier this month, scientists with the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) said there was a second eruption during the summer 2012 earthquake swarm, UniversoCanario.com reported. Their research ship discovered a submarine eruption and discolored water, possibly from erupted material such as ash, west of El Hierro, the researchers announced. The INVOLCAN scientists plan to present their results at the European Geosciences Union conference in April.

[Geology2] Ash from Icelandic volcano vastly underestimated

Ash from Icelandic volcano vastly underestimated

26 February 2013, by Alex Peel

The Icelandic volcano that wreaked havoc on Europe's airways in 2010 released 100 times more ash than originally thought, scientists say.

Eyjafjallajokull volcano

The study, published in The Journal of Geophysical Research, could allow us to forecast ash clouds from future eruptions more accurately, paving the way for improvements in the management of airspace.

'Before now, people have estimated the amount of ash in an eruption from the height of the plume, but this approach is only reliable in still air,' explains Dr. Mark Woodhouse of the University of Bristol, the study's lead author.

'We know that this eruption was very strongly affected by the wind,' he adds.

'We've found that, for small explosive eruptions, like the one at the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in 2010, the wind can have a very significant effect on the plume of ash.'

The April 2010 eruption released a cloud of ash that rapidly spread across Europe, grounding planes and cancelling holiday plans for thousands looking to take advantage of the Easter break.

'This study represents an important development in our modelling of volcanic plumes'
Dr. Mark Woodhouse,
University of Bristol

Forecasters used data from the Met Office, the expertise of volcanologists and observations from NERC's Dornier 228 aircraft to predict the path and impact of the cloud.

At the time, there was no reliable model for predicting how much ash the volcano was emitting.

Now, mathematicians and Earth scientists have worked closely together to simulate the effect of wind on explosive eruptions.

They found that strong winds prevented the plume from reaching as high as it would in a still environment.

This means estimations of ash quantities that rely on plume-height measurements alone could be dramatically undershooting the real figure.

Woodhouse hopes that, in providing a new model to take account of the wind, their work will leave us better prepared for future eruptions of this kind.

'This study represents an important development in our modelling of volcanic plumes,' he said. 'The results can complement the state-of-the-art forecasting tools used to predict the spreading of ash during volcanic crises.'

The research was part of a Natural Environment Research Council-funded consortium, working to learn the lessons of the 2010 eruption to better prepare the UK for future volcanic crises.

[Geology2] Hundreds of quakes shake villages around smoking Peruvian volcano

Hundreds of quakes shake villages around smoking Peruvian volcano

LIMA | Tue Feb 26, 2013

(Reuters) - Hundreds of small earthquakes have shaken the earth around the Sabancaya volcano in southern Peru over just a few days and the rumbling, along with plumes of smoke spewing up to 320 feet high, have put officials on alert to evacuate the area.

Peru's geological agency Ingemmet recorded some 536 quakes, about 20 an hour, on February 22 and 23 and periodic movement is ongoing.

Thousands of people live in the valleys surrounding the volcano. Some have already started to leave the region because the unusual seismic activity has damaged their homes. About 80 homes were damaged by one temblor on February 22, Peru's national defense office said.

The 20,000-foot (6,000-meter) volcano Sabancaya, which means "tongue of fire" in Quechua, has not had a significant eruption in nearly a decade. It sits atop the South America tectonic plate, which forces magma to the surface when it clashes with the neighboring Nazca plate.

Ingemmet said the volcano has been releasing huge smoke trails intermittently since January 15 and current seismic activity is similar to that which accompanied an eruption in 1986.

Sabancaya, active historically, was dormant for 200 years before erupting into activity several times in the 1980s and 1990s. No casualties were reported at that and the volcano has only experienced small eruptions since.

Southern Peru is the home to more than a dozen volcanoes.

Sabancaya is about 62 miles from the city of Arequipa, one of Peru's three largest cities, which was recently hit by heavy rains and flooding.

About 1.2 million people live in that city.
