[Geology2] Fwd: Make Your ShakeOut Drill a Success - Just Less Than 3 Weeks Away!

The 2014 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut day of action on October 16 is just less than three weeks away. With more than 2.1 million people registered in the Central U.S. (out of 21.8 million overall worldwide), we are already on the way to surpass last year's record total! Now is the time to ask: what can I do to prepare for my drill and how can I get others involved? People and organizations in your community may be inspired to participate because of your example.

Tips for a Successful Drill

Develop a plan and have the supplies and resources you need for your ShakeOut Drill:

- Learn how to participate, whether as an individual or organization, or for a variety of situations, including for people with disabilities.

- Download and share posters, informational flyers, drill broadcast recordings, drill manuals, and other materials, available on the Resources tab of the ShakeOut website.

- Get items from the ShakeOut Shop such as t-shirts, buttons, participation stickers, drill leader kits, and more.

- Put your event on our events calendar if your drill will be open to the public or the media.

New Resources for 2014!

- Post #Shakeout social media content from the ShakeOut Social Media Messaging document.

- Learn how your college can participate on the ShakeOut College and University Guidelines and Resources page

- Choose options for coordinating your government agency's ShakeOut drill and public outreach

National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month is a great time to commit to doing something towards emergency preparedness. Please share your activities this month by including the hashtag #NatlPrep with any of your posts on social media. Find out more information at ready.gov/september.
The last day of National Preparedness Month (September 30th) is National "PrepareAthon!" Day. Modeled after ShakeOut, America's PrepareAthon! is a national effort to get people prepared for a variety of other hazards (floods, hurricanes, tornados, widefires, and more), and to assess each year how many people are taking action. Learn what to do When the Earth Shakes!
ShakeOut participation totals for each state are included towards participation in America's PrepareAthon! so your participation inspires others to take action across the country!
We're All in This Together

As you get ready to #ShakeOut, don't forget to share the preparedness steps you take on social media, via email, or in person with your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. What you provide as an example could help teach another person what to do, which could save their life!

Thank you for your continued commitment to disaster preparedness!
