[Geology2] Mayon eruption may be sooner than predicted — Phivolcs official

October 4, 2014

Mayon Volcano is going to erupt. The only question is when, and it will not be sometime later but soon, officials of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Saturday.

A report on GMA News TV's "Balitanghali" quoted a Phivolcs official as saying current data indicated the characteristics of an eruption, adding that the volcano is currently in the lull period it always undergoes before releasing lava.

Moreover, the report said Mayon never returned to a dormant state once it showed signs of an eruption.

According to the latest update from Phivolcs, magma is rising within Mayon at a pace of one meter per hour, causing minute changes in volcanic pressure.

Due to the lava dome plugging up Mayon's crater, an eruption may be due next week, though resident volcanologist Ed Laguerta said geophysical data indicated "eruption may occur sooner than predicted."

Geodetic scientists sent to measure the movement and flow of the magma have reported that Mayon currently exhibits characteristics similar to its 1983 eruption.

Phivolcs specialist Edgardo Villacorte said this was further proof that an eruption was near.

Moreover, rain from the past few days may weaken Mayon's lava dome, which could lead to enruption.

Despite the impending Mayon event, students continue to attend their classes, with Albay Governor Jose Salceda saying attendance was at 90 percent on the average.

To dissuade their parents from coming back to the six-kilometer permanent danger zone, soldiers were tasked to keep their houses and animals safe from looters. Rie Takumi /LBG, GMA News
