It's been five days since scientists from the Observatory on Seismology and Volcanology of Costa Rica (Spanish acronym: OVSICORI) and the National Seismology Network (Spanish initials: RSN) climbed to the top of the Turrialba volcano along with emergency management officials after a powerful eruption.. As previously reported by The Costa Rica Star, geologists, petrologists, volcanologists, and seismologists braved pyroclastic flow conditions and persistent ash columns to bring us more information about this magnificent and dangerous event.
The video below was filmed by volcanologist Eliecer Duarte on Novemeber 2nd, and it was recently shared by online news daily CRHoy.com. Mr. Duarte was in the volcano and crater areas for more than two hours as his team took measurements, surveyed damage to monitoring instruments and took geological samples.
At this time, the communities near the skirts of the Turrialba are taking precautions due to the high concentrations of ash and sulfur dioxide in the air.
