[Volcano_Vista_HS] VVHS Announcements--Tuesday, December 4, 2012

Congratulations to this week's students that were recognized for demonstrating the core values of our school Safety, Organization, Achievement and Respect. Way to SOAR! Also, remember you can turn in SOAR cards for merchandise every Friday at the SOAR store in H Hall near DECA Store. Also, this is the last drawing for this semester. . The grand prize drawing will take place at the assembly this week. Therefore, please make sure you get your cards turned in prior to the drawing in one of the academy offices or the library. The following are the six students that were randomly drawn for our weekly prize:

The Hawk Band will be having a Holiday Concert and Silent Auction on Wednesday, December 5th at 5:30 in the PAC.

The drama department will be presenting "Scrooge: The Musical" on Friday and Saturday night at 7 in the Black Box.

Attention all students and faculty that signed up for the Faculty/Student challenge this week – Volleyball tournament. Please report to the main gym at 11:05 AM. Each team will play 1 game Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at lunch. The top teams from each pool will play Thursday in the semifinals. The championship game will be during the assembly on Friday.

Mr. Wellman will have another Youth and Government meeting on Wednesday during lunch. Please swing by for information on the program to F104. We are looking for people who love to argue.

Converge Bible study will be meeting at lunch in Room F211. Remember to bring a friend!

[Volcano_Vista_HS] VVHS Announcements--Monday, December 3, 2012

Academic Decathlon: Don't forget, your first competition is this afternoon (Monday)! Meet right after school in Mrs. Taylor's room so we can get started. Please bring a calculator.

Our orchestra will be having a concert on Tuesday at 6:30 in the PAC.

The Hawk Band will be having a Holiday Concert and Silent Auction on Wednesday, December 5th at 5:30 in the PAC.

If you are a student needing to retake classes, eCademy registration will begin today. You need to bring $15, cash or money order only, to your academy counselor. Schedule an appointment with your counselor to review you transcript and sign up for these online options.

Bowling: On Saturday 5 teams represented the school in three divisions. We had a very respectable showing by our Novice team of

as they finished 5th out of 20 teams. Also finishing 5th was the Rookie division team of:

This coming Saturday the team will be at the Starlight Lanes and coach hopes to be able to once again field 5 teams in the competition.

Teachers and faculty of Volcano Vista by now most if not all should have received a flyer about the bowling tournament. Coach would like to point out that last year the faculty was represented very well by (pause) ONE teacher. I know it's intimidating to have to face our talented bowlers but we do hope we have a few more faculty at the tournament. You can drop your entry off at room E209. Keep Rolling!!

[Volcano_Vista_HS] Senior Cap and Gown/Announcement Order Deadline is approaching

Moderator's Note: I received the following information from a parent who called Campus Specialties about cap and gown/announcement orders. She gave me the following info to pass along...

Concerning Senior Cap and Gown Orders...Orders cannot be placed over the phone or internet…they must be made in person or by mailing the order form (list address). Orders received after December 7th will cost $20 more, since the early-ordering discount will no longer apply. Also, there's no minimum order # for announcements…they are $1.05 each; quantities of less than 30 should be written in the "other qty" box, on the right, under Custom Graduation Announcements.

2006: Offshore winds gusted to 92 mph with seven gusts over 75 mph in northwest San Bernardino.
Gusts reached 75 mph at Fremont Canyon.
Downed power lines sparked a small fire in the Inland Empire.
16 power poles were downed in Valley Center.

2001: 20" of snow fell at Tahoe City.

2000: Dense fog caused several fatal car accidents in San Diego County.
One man involved in the accidents jumped over a guard rail to escape traffic.
Unaware he was on a bridge, he fell 70 feet to the road below.

1999: Santa Ana winds produced a gust of 90 mph at San Bernardino and 68 mph in Fontana.

1974: Heavy rain that began on this day ended on 12.4.
There was considerable flooding of low lying areas of Orange County.

1966: Start of the flooding event in the Kern County Sierra Nevada, which persisted through the 8th, including flooding at Kernville.

1966: Heavy rain drenched the region, even the mountains, from 12.2 to 12.7.

It also reached 80° in Palomar Mountain the next day, 12.4.1958.
It also reached 93° in Palm Springs on 12.7.1938.

1919: 26" of snow fell at Sierraville, with 11.5" at Reno.

(12-02) 12:39 PST -- The sun finally peeked out between the clouds Sunday morning as the third of three big storms sweeping through the Bay Area began to taper off, leaving the region soggy and damaged but not as disastrously flooded as some had feared.

The storm dropped fewer inches than forecasters had predicted, allowing the National Weather Service to cancel its flash flood warning for most counties.

Flood watches are still in place for Sonoma County, particularly along the Russian River, as well as along the Napa River. However, Napa city officials said they don't expect the river to leap its banks, and the Russian River is not expected to spill over significantly until Monday.

That doesn't mean there isn't significant aggravation from the heavy rains, though.

In San Francisco, the Muni Church Station is flooded, and the Municipal Transportation Agency is providing bus shuttles from West Portal to Embarcadero to fill in. BART service along many lines was briefly stopped by a weather-related power outage

A big rig overturned on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge shortly before dawn and shut down the eastbound lanes for about five hours before being re-opened.

Traffic was similarly stopped Sunday around 9 a.m. on eastbound Highway 24 at Moraga by a crash involving at least four vehicles, including one SUV that wound up on its roof. Traffic began moving slowly through area again before noon.

Along Highway 4 near Pittsburg, more than two dozen cars heading west had to pull over Sunday morning with flat tires because of a large hole in the road.

Winds and rain knocked down electrical lines in many places, triggering power outages to about 20,000 people in the Bay Area, including about 2,000 in San Francisco, according to PG&E. Another 7,500 in the East Bay and 5,000 in the North Bay are without power.

The storm was the third to hit the Bay Area over the past six days. It was expected to drop 1 to 3 inches of rain at lower elevations in the Bay Area on Saturday night and Sunday and from 3 to 7 inches at higher elevations.

Northwest Sonoma County was expected to get the most rain, according to the National Weather Service.

The Russian River will probably crest near Guerneville on Monday, said Duane Dykema, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. And despite the stoppage of rainfall, the Napa River will continue to rise until Sunday afternoon as it is fed by creeks and hills shedding their loads.

The Truckee River in the Sierra Nevada was also running high and fast, and Reno was experiencing some minor flooding.

The first storm, which hit Wednesday, moved quickly and dropped about 2 inches of rain at peak points in Sonoma County, Dykema said, but the second storm moved slower and dropped more rain on Thursday and Friday. "With the first two storms, we've already seen as much as 10 inches," Dykema said.

Downtown San Francisco saw 2.32 inches from the first two storms and downtown Oakland 2.33 inches. The wettest spot in the Bay Area was Venado in Sonoma County with a drenching 12.44 inches.

1915: Warmest December day in Bakersfield, high of 87° set an all-time record for the month.
