Mars rover finds mysterious stones

The Mars rover Opportunity, now 9 years old and still going strong, has discovered hundreds of mysterious stone spheres embedded in an outcropping field of clay on the rim of a giant Martian crater.

The tiny objects, barely bigger around than huckleberries or bb shot, are stumping the rover's scientists, and they appear to have tough shells and softer interiors.

In images sent to Earth, some appear to have been cracked open - perhaps by an ancient impact - but how they formed in a Martian region now believed to be more than 3 billion years old is just as mysterious the planet itself.

Stephen S. Squyres, Opportunity's chief scientist, discussed the objects Tuesday at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in Moscone Center and will report on them more formally Wednesday.

The rover landed on Mars in January 2004 on what was to be a three-month mission to seek signs of ancient water on the planet. It has now traveled 22 miles and has found plenty of highly suggestive evidence that water existed on Mars long ago.

One major piece of evidence that Opportunity discovered early in the mission were tiny spheres in varied sizes that Squyres has nicknamed "blueberries."

Those objects varied in size and contained the iron mineral hematite, which clearly forms in water. They lay in a crater where the sand was heavy in sulfates, so the water there would have been a weaker version of sulfuric acid, Squyres and his colleagues reported at the time.

Now Opportunity's scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, exploring the giant Martian crater Endeavour by remote control, have found what seem to be hundreds of the "newberries" lying on rocky outcrops of one part of the crater's rim.

Here, unlike the acid environment of the "blueberries," the "newberries" lie in clay rock that has formed in a far more benign kind of water "in an earlier time when the water was not acid, and possibly suitable for life," Squyres said Tuesday.

The tiny spheres are a big mystery, he said. They might have formed from unknown minerals that precipitated out of ancient sandstone, or they might be volcanic, belched out of some ancient eruption, or they might have been sculpted long ago by Martian winds, he suggested.

"Clearly this is very ancient rock," he said of the area, perhaps 3 billion years old. A spacecraft in orbit around Mars has detected "unambiguous" infrared signals of the clays on the surface there, he noted.

"We're trying to keep an open mind about the newberries," he said.

There are a good six more months of exploring before the next Martian winter slows things down for a time until a 10th year may come for Opportunity.

2007: Surf with highest sets to 18 feet struck the coast of San Diego County (10 feet in Orange County) on this day and on 12.6.
Highway 101 in Cardiff was inundated with minor flooding.
The Imperial Beach Pier sustained minor damage.

1998: A funnel cloud was observed two miles southwest of Imperial Beach.

1997: 14" of snow fell at Mammoth Lakes Ranger Station.

1992: A big storm that started on 12.4 and ended on 12.7 brought rainfall from 0.5" at the coast to up to six inches of precipitation in the mountains.
1.65" fell in Coronado, 1.60" in Vista, 1.42 in Fallbrook, 1.32" in Escondido, and 1.15" in San Diego.
Flooding in Tijuana killed four and left hundreds homeless.
6" to 2 feet of snow fell in the mountains.
Local flooding, mud slides, standing water, and road closures resulted.

1987:
A cold front crossing the Pacific Coast brought heavy rain on 12.4 and on this day. Mt. Wilson was drenched with 2.17" in six hours.
Thunderstorm winds gusted to 55 mph at Newport Beach.
Gale force winds battered the coast with speeds exceeding 40 mph, causing tree damage and power outages.

1966:
Heavy rain drenched the region, even the mountains, from 12.2 to 12.7.
Storm totals for the period: 27.79" in Lake Arrowhead (believed to be a 100 year rainfall), 23.73" in Palomar Mountain, 18.72" in Big Bear Lake, 17.85" in Idyllwild, 9.14" in San Bernardino, 7.63" in Redlands, 6.21" in Santa Ana, 5.19" in Riverside, 2.99" in San Diego, 2.73" in Palm Springs, but only 0.66" in Victorville and 0.28" in Barstow!
At least two homes were destroyed by floods and debris flows in Mill Creek Canyon.
Debris flows and floods damaged homes and roads in Wrightwood and Lytle Creek.
Homes and businesses were flooded in Redlands and Palm Springs.
Many roads across the region were flooded and washed out.
Scuba divers could not recover a Montclair man believed drowned in floodwaters.
Strong storm winds caused power outages.
On this day 6.66" of precipitation fell in Idyllwild, the greatest daily precipitation amount on record.

1958: It was 85° in Victorville, the highest temperature on record for December.

1951: Lodgepole received 19" of snow; Huntington Lake recorded 11".

1909: 10" of snow fell at Glenbrook.

1992: A big storm that started on this day and ended on 12.7 brought rainfall from 0.5 inch at the coast to up to 6" of precipitation in the mountains.
1.65" fell in Coronado, 1.60" in Vista, 1.42" in Fallbrook, 1.32" in Escondido, and 1.15 in San Diego.
Flooding in Tijuana killed four and left hundreds homeless.
Local flooding, mud slides, standing water, and road closures resulted.
6" to 2 feet of snow fell in the mountains.

1987: A cold front crossing the Pacific Coast brought heavy rain on this day and on 12.5.
Mt. Wilson was drenched with 2.17" in six hours.
1.02" fell at LA between 5 and 7 pm and rain rates of 1" per hour were reported for a time at John Wayne Airport.
0.61" fell in 30 minutes in San Diego all on this day.
Thunderstorm winds gusted to 55 mph at Newport Beach.
Gale force winds battered the coast with speeds exceeding 40 mph, causing tree damage and power outages.
Flooding in downtown LA prompted some evacuations.
Flooding, including water into some houses, was reported in Fallbrook.
More flooding was reported all across San Diego County, including downtown San Diego, where numerous motorists were trapped in their vehicles.
A mudslide closed Valley Center Road and Lake Wohlford Road.
In Westminster winds gusted up to 60 mph and damaged 40 mobile homes, nine of which were ripped out of the ground, and left 24 people homeless.
Boats were shaken loose from their moorings.
Lightning struck a radio tower in Newport Beach, knocking the station off the air, and knocked out power to the area.

[californiadisasters] Earthquake I Experienced 24 Years Ago Yesterday



Type of Faulting: left-lateral strike-slip, with very minor reverse motion
Time: December 3, 1988 / 3:38 am PST
Location: 34° 8.47' N, 118° 7.96' W Directly below the city of Pasadena.
Magnitued: ML5.0
Fault Involved: Raymond fault
Depth: 15.6 km

 Apart from its effects on local residents, this quake was notable for a few seismological details. First, it was followed by an unusually small number of aftershocks for a quake of its magnitude, the largest of which was hardly noticable -- only a magnitude 2.4 (unless the Montebello earthquake is considered an aftershock of this event). Second, it served to bring the debate over the sense of motion of the Raymond fault closer to an end, by providing a clear example of left-lateral movement most likely located along that fault.
