California: One person still missing. It happened near the mouth of the Klamath River, in Del Norte County, CA. A Tsunami Warning continues for the: coastal areas of California and Oregon from Point Concepcion, California, to the Oregon-Washington border A Tsunami Advisory continues for the: coastal areas of California from the California-Mexico Border to Point Concepcion, California, and Coastal areas of Washington - British Columbia and Alaska from the Oregon-Washington Border to Attu, Alaska. One injury – a Fish and Game Warden was hurt when his vessel struck a boat in Ventura, California, harbor that had broken loose. Major damage to docks and at least 35 boats at Crescent City, California, harbor. CALTRANS reported some sections of Highway 101 at the Humboldt/Del Norte County line were closed due to the tsunami. Damage to boats in Santa Cruz, California, harbor. Morro Bay Harbor Patrol reported two boats broke off their mooring - one boat was in danger of sinking, several pilings have broken off and a small dock has broken loose. Unconfirmed report of four people swept into the sea in Crescent City, California late this morning.
No damage to any USDA facilities has occurred in HI or CA as of this hour.
Big Island: Major damage is reported to Kona side of Kailua-Kona. Roadways are damaged, anecdotal reports of damage to houses. Ed Texeira reported that Kailua Kona pier was completely submerged SCD is sending two-man teams to Keehi Lagoon and Haleiwa to perform damage assessments No damages to medical centers. No utility outages All Holding Areas remain open Hawaiian Electric Power Companies prepared for the tsunami by moving vulnerable generation plants offline to avoid a loss of electricity. Hawaii Electric Companies said power providers on the islands shifted power generation to other plants that are not in the inundation zone and are less vulnerable to a retreat of water.
Maui: The County of Maui confirms major damage at Maalaea Boat Harbor. Kahalui International Airport is open, but roads to airport remain closed. Civil Air Patrol aircraft performed damage assessments of Maui and Kailua-Kona. CAP reported damage and debris field at Kailua-Kona Harbor by radio to USCG
Lanai: Damage to Manele Harbor on has been reported
Guam (from Guam CD): USCG just reported that Captain Tom Sparks in Guam had reopened the Port of Saipan. Port of Guam remains closed. Beaches remain closed and will stay so until police department does beach assessments Currently, no reports of damage or injury Estimate is that Guam was hit by a 1.5 foot tsunami wave.
American Samoa (from TEMCO): No reports of damage or injury No formal assessments being conducted at this time. Relying on call ins from public relaying any localized damage. Has received the ―All Clear‖ as of 1210 HST/1410 PST
CNMI (from EMO): No reports of damage or injury. CNMI harbor has reopened as of 0730 CHST/1130 HST/1330 PST

The Tsunami activity from this morning’s earlier earthquake in Japan has produced damage in the Pacific and U.S. west coast. Advance warnings, advisories and evacuations have apparently reduced the potential tsunami impacts. Assessment of damages is currently progressing. The FEMA NRCC, Regions IX and X RRCCs are activated at Level 1. ESF-9 is activated. Currently VA-TF1 (USA 1) and CA-TF-2 (Los Angeles County) (USA 2) have been activated by USAID and are preparing for deployment to Japan on behalf of the United States. The FEMA National US&R Branch has been developing contingency plans should the need arise to provide additional US&R assets to USAID for this international mission. There are no current open requests for overhead or US&R Teams at this time. |
| 03/11 | 0800 | An 8.9-magnitude earthquake off northeast coast of Japan affecting the island nation's eastern coast, The epicenter was 81 miles east of Sendai, Japan and unleashed a 23-foot tsunami. Hours later, the tsunami reached Hawaii, with initial reports citing little damage. A tsunami warning was extended to a number of Pacific, Southeast Asian and Latin American nations, including Japan, Russia, Indonesia, New Zealand and Chile. In the Philippines, authorities ordered an evacuation of coastal communities. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (http://www.tsunami.noaa.gov/) issued tsunami warnings and watches for the U.S. territories of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, as well as portions of coastal areas in Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon and Washington. The GACC is closely monitoring the effects of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck early this morning. Three overhead have been mobilized to FEMA's Region IX in Oakland CA for support. There have been no reports of damage in Central or Southern California coastal areas. |
