[californiadisasters] Spotter & SKYWARN News
Spotter and Skywarn News
By NWS San Diego Staff
Coast To Cactus Weather Examiner ~ April 2011
Looking over the spotter reports from this past winter indicates that we had more reports, and also more high quality spotter reports. I especially noted during the colder storms in February and March how many good snowfall reports we got. These reports often included the new snow amount as well as the total snow depth on the ground. Impacts were included such as road closures. Detailed descriptions and timing of events were much appreciated. As a result, we were able to finetune our winter storm warnings and advisories and make more accurate forecasts. I also noticed the great detail in reporting thunderstorm characteristics and different types of frozen precipitation such as hail and sleet. The reports are more sophisticated and useful!
Typically, spring is probably the most benign season we have, but spring has produced some pretty exciting weather too. Remember May 22, 2008, the day of the tornadoes in Moreno Valley? How about the lightning storms of June 3, 2009? Please keep refreshed on our weather spotting criteria, what to report, and when. You are providing an important public service in getting accurate and timely weather information out to those who need it. Thank you!
