LOL And people all across the US are still confused about how to pronounce, "opossum." The "o" is very much silent, which doesn't follow any rules other than it's a term that the Algonquins used for our only marsupial. Translation? The consensus is that it means "white dog."

Not only does the southwest have a strong Mexican and Spanish influence, there is also strong Native American influence.  I've had friends originally from the mid-west who knew how to pronounce Gila but not Havasu.  Gila is pronounced HE la and Havasu is pronounced just like it's spelled.  Makes for some very confused people.
