Following the tragic crash of Asiana Flight 214 the public immediately lit the Internet on fire seeking information on the incident. When? Where? What? And the hardest question to answer, especially in the early moments following a disaster, Why?

Answers to these questions are important duties for responders and the public has a right to that information. During any type of emergency the first priority of any agency is public information/education. In that effort, Cal OES hosted a half-day workshop for those that may be called on to participate in the response of a disaster here in California.

Yesterday, staff from almost every department within the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services and many stakeholder agencies, including (but not limited to) CalFIRE, California Department of Consumers Services, Federal Bureau of Investigation and American Red Cross, sat in a master class of risk and crisis communication. Dr. Vincent Covello, a world-renown authority in risk and crisis communication, presented the class to approximately 80 students. Dr. Covello has been a part of many large-scale crisis communications response team across the world, including the 2011 Japanese tsunami and earthquake and 2010 Haiti earthquake. He is now the director of the Center for Risk Communication in New York City.

Here are just some of the works of Dr. Covello:
