(09-08) 16:57 PDT -- Homes were being evacuated near Mt. Diablo State Park in Contra Costa County as a vegetation fire burned through 300 acres on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
As of 4 p.m., the fire was threatening 50 to 75 homes on the east side of the park, in the Curry Creek and Oak Hill area, putting those residences under mandatory evacuation, said Julie Hutchinson, a Cal Fire spokeswoman.
"They are making some progress, but it is burning some pretty thick heavy brush and now threatening some homes," she said.
The number of acres burned grew fast since the fire was first reported at 1:15 p.m., Hutchinson said. Firefighters were having a tough time battling the blaze, and just an estimated 10 percent was contained as of 4 p.m., she said.
"It's a steep and rugged area there, steep terrain with poor access," she said.
Several agencies were on the scene of the blaze, including Cal Fire and the fire departments of Contra Costa County, Marin County and the East Bay Regional Park District, said Brandon Leitzke, a Cal Fire battalion chief.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
