In modern times it seems to have started with the Detroit Pistons NBA championships in '89 & '90 and even moreso the Chicago Bulls early 90's championships, especially the first one in '91..... before those I have no memories of sports championships regularly leading to this.

I don't think we originated it, and I know for sure it's not our exclusive.
Championship sports wins have generated riots and near riots in several
cities in the world in recent years.
Not that it's a recent phenomenon, either, but it seems to have become the
norm lately. As Kim has termed it, "vulgarians and vandals"; it's not the
actual sports fans.

At this hour there is unrest in San Francisco as vulgarians and vandals
there opportunistically use the boisterous public celebrations of the San
Francisco Giants World Series Championship-winning victory tonight as the
impetus to riotous lawlessness.
Thus far a fire engine was temporarily taken over by the crowd and a
policeman was hit by a bottle and now there are small fires burning.
