10,123 Lightning Strikes Hit California on Sept. 9-10

NEVADA CITY, Calif. September 10, 2011 - California was hit by 10,123 lightning strikes during the 24-hour detection period ending at 6:00 am on Saturday morning. 1,286 of these downstrikes occurred between 5 and 6 am on Saturday morning.

The majority of strikes was recorded in Southern California, ranging from the coast to the Nevada border.

Multiple new fire starts are now reported in the Los Padres National Forest, in Kern County and Contra Costa. Updates will be posted as soon as available on our Fire News incident page.

According to CAL FIRE: Over night on Friday there were approximately 50 total strikes in northern California. As a result over 6 confirmed fires have sparked in CAL FIRE's jurisdiction.

Santa Clara Unit (Contra Costa & Alameda Counties)– 28 strikes, 5 fires, 200 acres, all contained. The three largest fires:
1) in Mt. Diablo State Park at Castle Rock at the north gate - 33 acres and 100% contained.
2) Morgan Territory Regional Park - 7 acres and 100% contained
3) Off Morgan Territory Rd and Leon Drive - 2 acres and 100% contained.

Humboldt Unit - 1 fire, small spot, 100% contained.

The National Weather Service in Sacramento has extended the red flag warning for the west side of the Sierra until 8:00 pm tonight for areas below 5,000 ft.
