MONROVIA, Calif. (KABC) -- Firefighters are battling a 90-acre brush fire in the San Gabriel Mountain foothills on the northwestern side of Monrovia Saturday.
Firefighters responded to a home near the area of Hillcrest Boulevard and Madison Avenue around 11:06 a.m.
Officials said the fire was sparked by a gardener working in the backyard of a house. The flames then spread to the undeveloped hillside behind the residence.
City spokeswoman Jennifer McLain says mandatory evacuations have been ordered as a precaution. Monrovia firefighters evacuated approximately 100 homes around 1:45 p.m. along several streets, including Heather Heights Ct, Magnolia Avenue, Alta Vista Avenue, Melrose Avenue, Patrician Way, Hidden Valley Avenue, Mesa Circle, Sky Way, Crescent Avenue, Highland Place, Franklin Place, Scenic Drive, Cloverleaf Drive and Ridgeside Drive.
Temporary shelter has been set up at the Monrovia Community Center located at 119 West Palm Avenue.
Highly-visible flames and smoke snarled traffic on the nearby 210 Freeway.
Firefighters called in a fixed-wing aircraft to help fight the blaze. Winds were light, but firefighters braced for any shift in wind conditions.
Fire officials say the fire is 10 percent contained.
Officials said a firefighter suffered a heat-related injury. No property damage has been reported.
