[californiadisasters] Admin Read: Keep Calm & Carry On

Achtung Gruppe!

While I was away today this group functioned in a most dysfunctional manner and as a result I am decidedly not a happy camper. Rule #1 of Yahoo Groups is to NEVER argue with a moderator or list-owner, even if you feel they are in the wrong and you are right.

I have violated this precept on other groups even though I believe I was right. I am currently on moderation on three Yahoo Groups and was banned from another. The list-owner who banned me is a total idiot who doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground (it's a Southern California rockhounding group). Two of the list-owners who have me moderated are to varying degrees dip-shits (scanner-related groups owned by guys with more technical skills than social skills) and the third is owned by an okay guy who doesn't appear to be too involved with his group anymore (a regional fire group). His mods are also mods on the other two groups to which I'm moderated so guess what?

Is it fair? Hell no, but life isn't fair. I violated Rule #1 of Yahoo Groups and got what was coming to me even though I feel I was on the right in each case. DO NOT argue with a moderator/list-owner even if you feel he/she is wrong. I believe David Leeper, whom my moderator shit-canned today, had a right to believe what he wanted to believe and share it here and he did so. However, he did also subsequently violate Rule #1. Mr. Leeper has a long-standing reputation for being confrontational and got spanked for stirring the shit here on our group. He knew better and yet chose not to act appropriately. In other words, DO NOT feel sorry for him: he is not a victim of my moderator bullying him. Mr. Leeper is no stranger to online confrontation. This was a case of two opinionated guys going at it and the non-moderator lost and the better man won as it should be. I personally know Moderator Rick and he is a good guy even if he will never win "diplomat of the year". ;-p

With that being said I am most dissatisfied with the outcome of the debate today. California Disasters did not shine as it typically does. Members should NEVER argue with moderators and moderators should strive to deescalate avoidable tensions. I am confident this was an aberration and won't be repeated so I am not going to loose any sleep over it. However, I just want all of you to know where I stand on this, be you a member or a moderator. I also invite former member Jerry who unsubscribed today to come back. Let's all learn from this and move on. To use a newer cliche: this was a "teaching moment".

And please, folks, don't be shy to post on here. I strongly urge members to be involved as I don't like being the guy who accounts for 75% or more of the posts. I would like to see more involvement and input from members. Today just got weird and it is unfortunate but won't happen again.

Peace~Out
