That's not ignroance-that's a very good question. And I have an answer. Having seen the layer myself, which is, as you pointed out, an extremely small layer, the layer itself denotes a catastrophic event-only! The fossils would naturally be found immediately after or above that thin layer. The blast sent a fast retort of debris and iridium across the planet and burned everything it touched. The layer that I witnessed was about the width of my fingernail in places, and up to two inches in others. The blast layer would naturally not hold fossils as it would destroy everything it touched. Only when the blast had cleared and a stable environment returned could dino fossils be found.
