An uncontrolled fire swept through areas of the Pfieffer Ridge area west of Highway 1 in Big Sur on Monday.

The latest:
  • The fire broke out shortly after midnight Monday between Pfeiffer Ridge and Sycamore Canyon west of Highway 1. The cause has not been determined and no injuries have been reported.
  • The fire had consumed about 550 acres by Tuesday morning, 50 acres more than the previous night, according to the Associated Press.  The fire is about 5 percent contained, Forest Service Deputy Fire Incident Commander Dana D'Andrea said Tuesday morning.
  • Up to 50 homes have been affected by the fire, officials said Tuesday, including that of Fire Chief Martha Karstens
  • More than 100 residents were evacuated from Pfeiffer Ridge Road. It was unknown when they would be allowed to return.  A Big Sur community meeting is planned for 4 p.m. at Big Sur Station.
  • Captain Cooper Elementary School closed Monday and will hold classes at Carmel River School on Tuesday and beyond until the school is cleared for air quality. A regular bus schedule and school day is planned for Carmel Middle School and Carmel High School students unless the road conditions change.
  • Andrew Molera State Park also was closed.
  • About 100 homes lost power and Pacific Gas & Electric crews couldn't get in to assess the damage. CHP said Highway 1 would remain open unless the fire crossed to the east side.
  • More than 600 crew came from the U.S. Forest Service, Cal Fire, the volunteer fire brigade and numerous other departments. Though air tankers were grounded for parts of the day Monday, crews carried on an air attack with helicopters.
