FRESNO, Calif. (KCRA) —A federal grand jury returned a four-count indictment Thursday, charging a 32-year-old man from Columbia with starting last year's Rim Fire in the Stanislaus National Forest and Yosemite National Park.

The nine-week long fire burned through more than 250,000 acres. It ranks as California's third-largest wildfire and the largest in the Sierra Nevada's recorded history.

In the indictment, the grand jury charged that Keith Emerald, of Tuolumne County, kindled a fire in the Stanislaus National Forest. At the time of the fire, temporary fire restrictions were in place that prohibited fires.

Prosecutors also said that Emerald lied to federal agents and told them that he did not set a fire.

Emerald is expected to appear in a Fresno federal court.
