Subject: [Geology2] Scientists monitoring 'intense' earthquake swarm

Much has been said this year about earthquake swarms.  In Oklahoma the term fracking keeps getting thrown about but the state geologist says that the earthquake epicenters are several miles below any well depths.  There have been some quakes associated with well rejuvenation activities which aren't apart of the swarms aka clusters SFAIK.  There are probably several causes to the swarms we are seeing world wide and it will take a couple years for the research to get published.

That said, and this article predates the current intense solar activity but I believe someone made a good case for increased vulcanism and quaking based on the additional heat that is generated when cosmic rays and high energy particles penetrate into the earth.  I seem to remember that there is some lengthy delay but can't remember what the lag time is.  Some cosmic rays pass through the earth without collision with a single atom but quiet a lot do and can make tracks in rocks which we can actually map in individual specimens.  A report this past week squarely places Arctic ice sheet melting caused by the ice interferes with the radiation of heat from within the earth out into space owing to ice's absorption and re-radiation coefficients--Not man made global warming contrary to the IPCC's "It must be the cause as we know about everything else" (NOT).

I don't know that there is a close connection between solar flares/CMEs and earthquakes but if you google the terms you are likely to see some research papers on the subject. I believe there is a theoretical implanting of heat into the mantle and upper crust which may be related to CME bombardment from eons past. There was also a report this week that shows plate cooling and contraction on flexible plates as a cause of quakes and plate edge apparent speeds of movement.  The more we read about all the factors I hope that we have less anxiety but also aren't lulled into not making mitigation preparations for those things we can effect.   I listened today to a history channel series about the history of the Solar System and on to tsunamis and other catastrophes and it said I believe that Lassen erupted last in 1948. Vesuvius erupted in 1945  Etna smokes pretty much all the time.  Each has its own timeline for magma recharge.  I say that to say that we need more research to establish a connection with worldwide up-tics and if any of it can be tied to solar activity.  Somethings were set in motion before man existed and are just now showing up.

Isostatic rebound is the earthquake driver here in the Southern US and is possibly associated with those in Europe --I do not know their depths /parameters.  So other than mention solar activity and heating in the interior of the earth, I guess my point in making this post is not to assume that swarms around the earth are related.  Ebb and flow of a lot of things brings peaks and troughs in activity.  I think the fact that we can now measure the heaves and sighs from space along with widespread use of precision seismometers -- along with the internet make us finding out about them in real time seem that quakes are on the up-tic. Time will tell as in all things.

Have a good weekend!
Eman
