[Geology2] Thurston County warns homeowners about landslide hazard

Emergency managers in Thurston County warned homeowners in a neighborhood near Lacey about an increasing potential landslide hazard, Saturday, as heavy rains saturated a hillside.

The slope, along Marian Drive NE is "actively sliding," according to Thurston County Emergency Management, which posted notices on about half a dozen nearby homes.

The Thurston Conservation District inspected the hillside January 9th and this weekend's heavy rain has only increased the risk of a slide, emergency managers said.

No evacuations have been ordered.

"This is the kind of soil and steep slopes where it sloughs off and that's the risk you take when you live out here," said Terry Snyder, who lives in the neighborhood. He didn't plan to evacuate and said he wasn't aware of any neighbors planning to leave.

Homeowners are advised to watch out for signs of an impending slide:

  • Cracks that appear that were not seen before
  • The sudden appearance of groundwater or water coming from a hillside and that discharge was not seen before
  • Sunken areas in your lawn or areas that look like they have been recently disturbed
  • Utilities that suddenly stop working such as loss of power or water
  • Door frames that suddenly stick or are out of alignment
