Seismologist Javier Pacheco and Geologist Jorge Brenes of the Observatory of Volcanology and Seismology of Costa Rica (Spanish acronym: OVSICORI) climbed to the top of the Turrialba volcano yesterday and brought back video of crater. It is important to keep in mind that this very active colossus has been producing eruptions since last week; for this reason, airports and schools have been closed, access roads have been blocked, evacuations have taken place, and the Central Valley has been coated with volcanic ash.

At the Turrialba crater, the brave scientists from the OVSICORI observed that the volcanic matter that the Turrialba has released in the last few days corresponds to ash, incandescent (though not necessarily igneous) rock fragments, and gases. The volcanic matter in question is being released through a caldera to the west of the crater. The brave scientists have determined that the principal duct to the main crater must be blocked, which restricts the release of gases and energy, which in turn increases the pressure inside the volcano.

The forecast for the Turrialba volcano in Costa Rica is that further eruptions are likely due to the blocked passage described above. Although the presence of magma or lava has not been detected, it may be forthcoming. It is possible that new calderas may appear,. thus producing pyroclastic flow.
