Depending upon the strength of the storm, it can affect your ability to watch television programming as the uplinks or downlinks to the satellites can take a hit. Similar for satellite radio broadcasts, and aviation and marine services that are satellite based. Most pertinently, navigation errors can occur as GPS service can be blocked.

Typically, most storms have a longer lasting affect on hf communications which can affect aviation, marine, and amateur communications, certain military communications (everyone's military, not just the US) and some police and fire communications based on the VHF low bands. While you may not directly use these communications services, you may be in the air or on a ship at sea during these events which can have an affect on you.
