At about this time in 1963 the former Baldwin Hills Dam began to fail, starting out slowly at first but gathering momentum as it progressively failed. Almost four hours after the entire incident began the dam finally gave way. Water from the dam found its way into neighborhoods downstream destroying 277 homes. As a result of excellent evacuation efforts helped in no small measure by the live helicopter camera coverage by KTLA-TV, the first such live televised disaster coverage in history only 5 lives were lost.
