RE: [californiadisasters] Prepared for the worst



No one is truly ‘ready’, but it’s a start.  I’ve long maintained that one should go through EMT school as part of high school graduation requirements (it touches on many of the sciences so you could get points there too).  Even if the student doesn’t use the learning for years, it’s buried in there somewhere if the need arises.

Of course, we’ve had some folks that take the training but pass out at the sight of actual blood, gore etc.  One of the harder skills for some is maintaining a logical thought process in times of high stress.

Each night as she heads to bed and turns out the lights, Marina Garcia takes comfort in the knowledge she has learned in a Hancock College class.

In case of a disaster — either an act of nature or manmade — everyday citizens such as Garcia, who have specialized emergency training through the college, will be an invaluable asset to the community.
