[Geology2] RE: Long Invisible, Research Shows Volcanic CO2 Levels Are Staggering

The article says the best estimate of CO2 emissions from volcanic degassing is about 600 million tons/year, with maybe an additional 225 million tons released between eruptions. This totals up to around 825 million tons.

According to a report by the US Dept. of Energy carbon dioxide emissions in the US during 2009 were estimated at 5, 447 million tons. The US alone emitted more than six times as much CO2 as all the volcanoes in the world. During that year, emissions had dropped by 419 million tons simply because of the slowed economy caused by the recession. Total emissions worldwide must have been considerably larger, and would require the use of a superlative greater than "staggering".
