5 Fwy lanes closed in Sun Valley by mudslide, debris
Wednesday, October 09, 2013SUN VALLEY, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Interstate 5 Freeway lanes were closed due to a mudslide and debris in the roadway Wednesday.
All lanes of the 5 Freeway were closed in Sun Valley at Sunland Boulevard due to mud and debris covering lanes at 4 p.m.
Earlier, northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway were closed and only one southbound lane was open at Roscoe Boulevard due to the flooding.
Sigalerts were issued and remained in effect at 4 p.m.
Traffic was severely affected.
The California Highway Patrol said the mudslide is not rain-related; it may be a broken water main that flooded the embankment.
Caltrans says southbound 5 Freeway lanes may be compromised until at least 11 p.m.
Crews were expected to be clearing debris all evening, Caltrans said. Mud and rocks will need to be completely removed, not repacked onto the embankment, according to the agency.
