Temperatures could reach the triple digits in some Southern California areas during an unseasonable heat wave fueled by Santa Ana winds.
The combination of warm conditions and offshore winds will bring well above normal temperatures to much of the region Tuesday through Thursday. A high wind watch in effect from late Monday through Wednesday afternoon.
High temperatures will likely rise into the 90s in the valleys and across interior portions of the coastal plain.
It is possible that temperatures could reach 100 degrees in a few locations.
Some record high temperatures will likely be set this week, especially Wednesday and Thursday, forecasters said.
The combination of high temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds will cause heightened fire danger Tuesday through at Thursday.
These temperatures are 20 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year, forecasters said.
There may be a bit of cooling on Friday, but high temperatures should still reach or exceed 90 degrees in the valleys and possibly across inland areas.
More significant cooling is expected over the weekend as the upper high weakens and moderate onshore flow develops.
Officials recommend that people limit outdoor activities, drink plenty of water and dress in loose fitting, lightweight clothing this week.
