Re: [californiadisasters] LAFD Responds to a Crash of a Vintage Plane Piloted By Indiana Jones

A normal landing is not a controlled crash but is a controlled transition from aircraft to land craft.

With a glide angle above what a rock has, the chance of choosing a safer location is improved.  With altitude, greater range and options.

The Delta flight will come down to pilot error, flying into an unsafe field; with some shared blame for the field operations.  Ice is treacherous, there was too much for the plane weight to overcome.  They got very lucky that they stopped where they did.

Any landing, either by fixed wing or rotor wing is a controlled crash! Most have better outcomes but this was definitely a survivable event. The other lucky folks, today, are the ones that were in the Delta jet the almost slid into the icy waters next to La Guardia!
